IKEA ad stirs controversy

BLOOMINGTON — The American Family Association is complaining about a U.S. advertising campaign for IKEA—a home furnishings company with a branch location in Bloomington, Minn.—which features a homosexual family theme.

The commercial features a same-sex couple and young female child on the floor. The three lean against the couch, resting on each other as a voiceover asks, “Why shouldn’t sofas come in flavors, like families?”

“IKEA, predominantly in Sweden, produces dozens of pro-homosexual ads that they air on Swedish TV,” said Randy Sharp, AFA special projects director. Sharp says the AFA has sent a letter to the company, which has corporate offices in Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, explaining to executives that IKEA’s promotion of homosexual couples as the definition of a family is offensive to pro-family U.S. citizens and undermines American values.

“We’ve asked IKEA, if they’re going to run ads in this country, to at least make those ads reflect the values of our society,” Sharp said. “And that is that two men and a child do not make a family.”
